Tracking conservation progress with #1wild in Efatsy Manombo NPA

Conservation is not only about protecting focal species: the southern ruffed lemur; it is also about understanding how wildlife populations are changing, how women communities perceive and engage with conservation.

As part of the ongoing project in the Efatsy Manombo NPA, GERP is conducting monitoring of southern ruffed lemurs to assess population trends and guide future conservation actions. Since the beginning of the project, monitoring of two groups has recorded a succession of three births, providing encouraging signs of population growth. We hope to continue tracking these groups and observe more individuals over time, allowing us to better understand population changes and strengthen the protection of this threatened lemur species. This positive trend linked to the continuous presence of local community surveillance, which contributes to protecting the natural habitat and reducing pressures on the species.

Another important component of the project is assessing ecological recovery through reforestation and arboretum monitoring in collaboration with #MBG Madagascar. In Anivorano, a local women's association is involved in monitoring the arboretum species and supporting restoration activities. This ongoing monitoring will help identify which native plant species are best suited to support long-term forest restoration.

To facilitate access and management of the restoration area, a main pathway has also been established. The site includes different restoration and demonstration areas, including botanical garden, agroforestry areas, medicinal plants, and melliferous plants.
