For several decades, GERP has worked with passion and determination to protect Madagascar’s lemurs true treasures of the world’s biodiversity. Through constant vigilance, recognized scientific rigor, and exemplary teamwork, the association has achieved concrete and lasting results in the field, proving that a harmonious future between humans and nature is possible.
At Maromizaha, our flagship site in eastern Madagascar, the combined efforts of our teams and partners have led to a remarkable outcome: ZERO FIRE since 2018. This success is no coincidence. It reflects the strong collaboration between GERP, its dedicated donors, and above all, the unwavering commitment of our forest rangers (polisin'ala). These brave men patrol days and nights, often in remote and challenging areas, to safeguard the wildlife and flora that make Madagascar so unique.
Our efforts are now bearing fruits. Studies conducted in Maromizaha reveal a significant increase in lemur populations:
· Indri indri: from 35.5 to 51.5 individuals/km² between 2020 and 2024 a 45% increase;
· Eulemur rubriventer: from 7.43 to 10.58 individuals/km² a 42% rise;
· Hapalemur griseus: from 42.17 to 50.60 individuals/km² a 20% growth.
These figures demonstrate the effectiveness of our integrated approach, where science, conservation, and community engagement move forward hand in hand.
At the heart of this success lies a strong bond of trust and collaboration with local communities. GERP firmly believes that protecting lemurs and forests can only be achieved with and for the people who live alongside them. In Maromizaha, Mahadrodroka, and Manombo, local residents actively take part in conservation efforts: reforestation, patrols, awareness campaigns, environmental education, and sustainable livelihood projects (income generating activities).
Through this inclusive approach, a genuine sense of ownership has emerged. Local people no longer see themselves as mere beneficiaries, but as actors and guardians of their own natural heritage. This unity strengthens the sustainability of our actions and ensures the long-term protection of forests for generations to come.
The three sites managed by GERP embody one shared vision: making Madagascar a sanctuary for biodiversity and especially for lemurs, combining science, education, and sustainable development.
Now more than ever, your support is essential. GERP is currently conducting a fundraising campaign in collaboration with Conservation Allies.
And here’s the great news! YOUR DONATIONS UP TO 5000$ WILL BE DOUBLED , meaning every contribution you make will have twice the impact for lemur and forest protection!
Every donation, every partnership, every gesture counts. Together, we can continue to make Madagascar a model of coexistence between humans and nature.
Supporting GERP means protecting lemurs, but also preserving life, forests, and the hope of a future where our children will inherit an island that remains vibrant, green, and alive still watched over by its silent guardians.
