National Lemur Day 2025 – “Saving Lemurs, Preserving Our Legacy”

Every last Friday of October, Madagascar honours its lemurs, unique primates found nowhere else on Earth, in the annual National Lemur Day. Although the 2025 celebration could not take place in full, the call to action remains louder than ever: we must act now to ensure their survival.

For over three decades, GERP has been dedicated to the conservation of lemurs, scientific research on their ecology and distribution, and community outreach.  Our commitments include:

  • Protecting and sustainably managing key forest habitats that host endangered lemur species.

  • Conducting rigorous scientific work: discovering new lemur species, monitoring populations, mapping habitats.

  • Implementing environmental education and capacity-building programmes for local communities and youth.

Why this day matters?

Lemurs play vital roles in Madagascar’s forests: seed dispersal, forest regeneration, ecosystem health. Yet their survival is threatened by:

  • Deforestation and habitat fragmentation

  • Poaching and illegal wildlife trade

  • Rural poverty driving unsustainable resource use.

We translate this into action across three pillars:

  1. Field Action: strengthen forest protection, support patrolling teams, restore degraded habitats.

  2. Community Engagement: involve local people as conservation actors, promote sustainable livelihoods, build local ownership.

  3. Awareness & Inspiration: share lemur stories, connect institutions, NGOs and supporters, inspire the next generation.

👉 Call to you:

  • Support our efforts: become a partner, donate or explore our programmes.

  • Share this message, stay informed, speak up for lemurs.

  • Commit to making every day a Lemur Day: consume responsibly, value nature, empower youth.

On National Lemur Day 2025, even without large public festivities, our commitment stands strong for lemurs, for Madagascar, for our shared future.
